8 Ways to use Google Alerts

  1. Personal name. You can find out who and where mentions you online. This is particularly useful for promotion of individual service providers, as well as authors, bloggers, celebrities, and so on.
  2. Business name. In the same fashion, you can track the websites that mention your brand name. This gives you the chance to express gratitude or send an issue if there’s something wrong posted about your company. Authoritative companies do track mentions of their business name, so you should follow their suite.
  3. Your website or blog. You can also check whether your website domain has been mentioned. Don’t include “www” – just leave your domain and extension, for instance, “mycompanyname.com”. You can also track your blog and find blog links with your website address serving as a specific pointer to one of your pages.
  4. Titles. If you create articles for online marketing, you can use alerts for your article titles and check where they appear. By the way, it also works for book titles.

Exact Keyword Search

You can specify exact keywords by typing a plus sign (+) in front of the word. For instance, if you search for word “design”, Google search results will also include “designer” or “designing”. Add + sign before the word (+design), and you will only get the exact matches.

Exact Key Phrase Search

Similarly, when you’re trying to find a phrase, Google results will show you anything comprising the words from the phrase, not the phrase itself. To avoid it, enclose your words in quotes (“modern kitchen design”), and the results will include only the exact phrase.

Alternate Keyword

To broaden the search results use “OR” between the words (both letters should be capital). For instance “designer OR engineer”) will show you the results with either keyword. You can make a more complex phrase like (designer OR engineer) “job hiring Sacramento”.

Use Synonyms

If you want the search results to include related terms, use a tilde (~) before a word. For instance, if you use the word “~design”, Google will show you results including “art”, “construction”, and “interior”.

Search a Single Website

You can also track the publications on some certain website by using “site” operator. For instance, if you want to track mentions of Bitcoin on Forbes website, your search should look like Bitcoin site:forbes.com.
