Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a system of interconnected servers that duplicate web-content, store it and quickly transfer it to the end-users. CDN serves to improve user experience by making users wait for the data less regardless of their location and time of the day.

While a web-site improves, gets bigger and attracts more users, its traffic grows. Lack of CDN can seriously affect the display of information: web-pages may load slowly and cause negative user experience. Today, a large amount of international companies use CDNs. Although this solution costs pretty much money (sometimes), it is highly beneficial for development and growth of web-site in the long run. If your company is small, and you can’t afford a large-scale CDN, you can always opt for a cheap and affordable content delivery network (CDN).

Some small businesses that realize that their present web-hosting is not enough to handle traffic flow decide to go for a more costly hosing plan. However, a CDN network can appear to be a cheaper solution that provides good coverage and great speed of connection. Indeed, sometimes implementing of CDN and usage of some small tricks to boost web-site loading can be far more effective and less expensive than moving to a more advanced plan. As soon as you implement a CDN you will see a significant reduction of bandwidth usage. In other words, use of a content delivery network may be cheaper than changing the level of web hosting packages. Besides, that may save bandwidth, because the load on the origin server will be much less. Visitors prefer web-sites that load quickly, so a CDN can give you a great advantage over the competitors.

Why you should start using a content delivery network?

Some web-site owners still think that they don’t need CDN services for their web-site. But the fact is that no matter how well a web-site is designed, and no matter what content it has – if it loads too slowly, customers will be discouraged from using it. Instead, they will prefer opening web-sites of competitors, where performance is of top-notch level.

When is it high time to start implementing a CDN?

  1. When the amount of web-content is increasing too quickly. Delivery of large amount of content puts tremendous pressure on web-site infrastructure. If the use of bandwidth and storage space is inadequate, and cannot be supported by present server configuration, performance of a web-site will be affected. A CDN can help to balance loading and provide sufficient speed of content loading, and does not require too complicated setup/
  2. When the number of visitors and amount of traffic are too high. While new content (audio, video, images) is being added, more visitors are attracted to the content which can result into slow work of the network. If that blocks the infrastructure of a web-site, the entire functionality will be affected. With a content delivery network, it is not a problem.
  3. If there are more mobile visitors. Smartphone and tablets are used in almost 50% of web-site use. Not all web-pages are mobile optimized, which can result into slow loading and higher abandonment rates. CDN can boost the speed of page delivery and content transfer for mobile users, as well.

To ensure quick customer access to different kinds of content and sites, CDN service can and should be used. It will provide high response times, excellent speed of loading and outstanding user experience without compromising security.
